Eric Ambler (Londres, 1909 1998) fue uno de los más prolíficos autores de novelas de espías y guiones cinematográficos de su tiempo. Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, se enroló en el Ejército británico, donde escribió propaganda militar. En 1945, finalizado el conflicto bélico, se instaló en Hollywood e inició una prometedora carrera como guionista, aunque al comienzo de la década de los cincuenta regresó a la novela. En 1958, abandonó definitivamente los Estados Unidos para volver a su Inglaterra natal.
