Mitsuki finds herself dreaming of the day when her mother will finally pass on. While doing everything she can to ensure her mother’s happiness, she grows weary of the responsibilities of a doting daughter and worries she is sacrificing her chance to find fulfillment in her middle age.

Minae Mizumura es una de las más importantes escritoras del Japón actual. Nacida en Tokio, se mudó con su familia a Nueva York a los doce años. Estudió literatura francesa en Yale. En 1985 publicó un ensayo crítico sobre la obra de Paul de Man. Cuando terminó su carrera, se instaló nuevamente en Japón y se dedicó a escribir ficción. Ha enseñado literatura japonesa moderna en las universidades norteamericanas de Princeton, Michigan y Stanford. Su libro Una novela real recibió el premio Yomiuri, uno de los mayores reconocimientos literarios de Japón, otorgado anteriormente a Kenzaburo Oé y a Yukio Mishima. También escribió textos críticos, artículos y ensayos. La herencia de la Madre fue originalmente dada a conocer en Japón por entregas, a modo de folletín, y luego publicada como libro. En 2012, recibió por este libro el prestigioso premio Osaragi Jiro a la mejor obra en prosa tanto de ficción como de no ficción.
