Steve Sem-Sandberg nació en Oslo en 1958 y creció en Estocolmo. Trabajó veinte años como crítico literario en Svenska Dagbladet antes de consagrarse a la narrativa. En 2009 publicó El emperador de las mentiras, que le valió el Premio August —el más importante de la literatura sueca— y lo situó entre los grandes narradores europeos de su generación. En 2016, su novela Los elegidos ganó el Prix Médicis Étranger. Es miembro de la Academia Sueca desde 2021. Impedimenta publicó W. Una historia en 2023 y publica ahora El océano, saludada unánimemente en Suecia como una obra maestra.
