PAPARAZZO: THE ELIO SORCI COLLECTION

Though he''s not a household name, photographer Elio Sorci''s legacy is undeniable. Sorci was the world''s first paparazzi photographer, responsible for capturing candid images of iconic celebrities such as Audrey Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot, Sofia Loren and Goldie Hawn at their most glamorous. He''s also responsible for helping birth the cult of celebrity as we know it today, exposing the private lives of such people to mass scrutiny. It was Sorci who would reveal Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton''s affair to the media, prompting a scandal so large that Taylor would make enquiries about legal action against Pope St. John XXIII after he condemned their "erotic vagrancy". For this interest in the famous, Sorci was duly rewarded. He was immortalised on film as the character Paparazzo in Federico Fellini''s classic La Dolce Vita, giving the breed of photographers who followed in his wake the title they''re still known by, "Paparazzi." Sorci now also finds the archives of his work posthumously turned into a set of startlingly beautiful books by Roads Publishing, who describe them as "candid, glamorous, often hilarious and always cool."
