This book is a collection of fifty eight blogs posted on the authors personal web site over a two year period. It was headed The Best of British and was inspired by my collection of news clippings. Read about cultural events that take place on May Day such as Penky Follar, famous and ordinary people like Billy Bunter, Desperate Dan and Judge Michael Argyle who once sentenced a football hooligan to life imprisonment. Eccentric clergymen and debates over sex shops appear here as well as a history of the Halifax gibbet and Tiddlywinks. Most articles are quite short with more than a touch of irreverent humour and read together explain what being British really means.

In this second volume of the Fordhamton Trilogy things are still not going smoothly for the Trustees of Alan Prices will. What kind of memorial did he intend to represent Harmony, Industry and Co-operation. Then the same three Councillors, the Mayor Michael Jackson, Peter Noone and Valerie Masters find themselves requested to deliver three envelopes in accordance with Arthur Browns will. It seems the late Arthur Brown knew all about the affair between Peter and Val. What they did not expect was an insight to his life and loves; a strong and pungent pipe smoking tobacco, specialised homecare and a pensioner support group that was a cover for a monthly meeting where strippers were invited and non-PC language was more than tolerated. Into this comes Tim Rose, a management trainee at CCS Bank who is left in the countryside with no money and no map. In his attempts to get back to the training centre he is arrested as the local flasher, rounded up with a bunch of foul smelling tramps and arrested again as an accomplice of a young women who has stolen Bank and Credit Cards. Their stay at a hotel is interrupted by a Special Branch raid who have been tipped off that he is an international terrorist. Things do not get better when he succumbs to a fever and taken in by a local journalist. The Mayor is more concerned about whether Pie Sunday can go ahead now that Arthur Browns house has been brought by an ethical company. Everything is saved by the Gryphon bat, nesting in its walls. But acting Detective Inspector Miles Davis sees conspiracies everywhere. Dave Edmunds, once of CCS Banking and now owner of the wine bar California Dreamin has an answer to everything but it is the Mayor who becomes the local hero with his solution to end the police enquiries as they edge closer to an uncomfortable and unwelcome truth.

Detective Chief Inspector Steve Winwood is recalled from retirement to locate a missing MI5 agent. He has no name and no photo to assist his search; only told that he is the right man for the job. He is soon informed that a left hand drive Range Rover crashed on the bypass, burst into a fireball and the car and driver burned to a cinder with no means of formal identification. After speaking to the police station sergeant and the brewery he is reasonably certain that the dead man was Roger Chapman, the Marketing Officer for Redbourne Brewery known to drive a left hand top of the range Range Rover SUV. In his attempts to verify this he is monitored by the agencies of the secret service. Winwood is a plain, working class man who does not believe in UFOs or aliens. However he has contact with strange Men in Black who do not offer any obvious physical threats but make it clear that he should do as he is requested. Winwood has to call on the help of his closest friends who he knows he can trust; Brian Bennett, Consultant Editor for the Rutherford International News Group (RING) and John Cherry, owner of an antiquarian bookshop who Steve has always suspected has links inside Government circles. These two provide Steve with evidence of alien life amongst the everyday life of Rutherford. Steve is still not totally convinced but two close encounters with the mysterious Men in Black shake that belief. His former Sergeant, now Detective Inspector Emma Porter arrives in town to investigate a case of an international property fraud brought to the attention of her department by a mysterious Chinese businessman. The trail leads back to Roger Chapman. Steve Winwood knows that everything he has unearthed is connected but as Brian Bennett warns him, who will believe it. His final report offers a simple solution of a man suffering a nervous breakdown after brokering a deal between the brewery and the Chinese went terribly wrong and being discovered as being the man behind the property scam was the last straw. Roger Chapman committed suicide but maybe that is not the truth. The truth is more bizarre. This book has drawn upon true stories of contacts with aliens; names have been changed but mysteries remain. The main one being the reason behind appearance of the sinister Men in Black. They are far from being Hollywood film stars but are they working for the Government or an alien intelligence? There is no definitive answer. Those who have encountered them do not want to meet them again.

This is the true story of Paul Arthur Crafton who in 1983 was dubbed The Mystery Professor by the media in the Eastern States of America. Although genuinely qualified with a Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering he taught at three Universities at the same time under three assumed names. There were certainly more as his deception was found to have been continous since 1979 or earlier as the FBI investigation got under way. He was initially uncovered as lying about his name and qualifications following the chance discovery of an article written by his real namesake for an Australian University. He was arrested as Peter H Pearse at Millersville University and then as John B Hext at Shippensburg University. Unsure of his real identity his arrest was published in the media which led to more higher education authorities recognising him as having taught for them but under a different name. His professional duplicity was mirrored by his personal life when materials for identity theft were found in one of his many apartments and then his womanising was also uncovered. Those involved in the investigation asked themselves why such an educated man would assume the career of a white collar criminal adept at creating so many false identities. Why would anyone accept the burden of travel between States and cities and at the same time try and disguise his lack of deep knowedge in the subjects he taught. Craftons defence was always that it was to pay for the medical treatment for his daughter who was severely disabled. What arises from this real detective story is a man dedicated to his family but also a man of so many talents that eventually led to the very public uncovering and dissection of his professional and private life. The police investigation was published in the national media and a long prison sentence was mitigated following a complicated plea bargain with the Office of the Attorney General.

As Shakespeare once said: We all have our exits and our entrances.This is a collection of news stories from the 1980s. They are real news items from around the world. The one common factor is that they all have a reference to death. Not just deaths of people and animals and the strange ways some have met their end but wills with eccentric clauses, misbehaving ghosts and the end of inanimate objects like rail routes.Some of these stories are sad, some amusing, some quite odd. There is no comment on any item and the news is printed exactly as was reported. They have been kept in scrapbooks throughout the 1980 decade. At the time they fascinated the author, made him smile or brought a tear to his eye. This box set contains all three parts of The Fordhamton Trilogy completely edited and amended to mirror the paperback versions, recently published.Part One: A Little Local Affair chronicles the effects the death of local businessman and Councillor Alan Price has on the lives of the residents of Fordhamton as they sometimes succeed and sometimes fail to pursue their sexual, economic and political ambitions. It brings to town the reluctant cockney Detective Inspector Steve Harley and his new assistant Detective Constable Miles Davis. In their own very different ways they manage to solve the identity of the culprit behind the suspicious death of Price. When Harley is recalled to London it is left to Davis to unscramble all the liaisons behind a conspiracy to defraud and arrest a surprising suspect for the arson attack on Prices factory and a spate of anti-social behaviour that hits the town.Part Two: Return to Fordhamton. This sees the return of the unlikable acting Detective Sergeant Miles Davis. He is soon caught up in a suspected fraud and a missing Bank management trainee who keeps being returned to Fordhamton in a series of mistaken identity crimes. His attempts are also halted by a very unusual virus carried by the local bat colony which had closed his ultimate destination Oates Hall, the Bank Training Centre. The will of one very notable Town Councillor leads to the three trustees finding out more about him, themselves and strange happenings in town. Davis has the full support of his superiors and reaches a conclusion that has everyone thinking what a great Inspector he would make, a decision not shared by the local residents.Part Three: The Last Resort. The Mayor has the wonderful idea of banishing the award of coming third in Britains Most Boring Town contest by creating the first Fordhamton Arts Festival to be run by an eccentric and one time student rebel Jay Hwkins, drama teacher at the local school. When the stand-in at the schools production of The Real Inspector Hound is found dead at the dress rehearsal suspicion falls on Hawkins. Now acting Detective Inspector, Miles Davis tries to make sense of the various affairs that go on at school and why the American Secret Service is so involved. His last resort is to join the cast of the play to uncover all the clues. He did not understand how the owner of the local wine bar saw him as his nemesis but the conflict is resolved and Davis finally becomes a man at peace with the world having fallen in love the plays leading lady and she with him.

This book is the story of my time with the National Westminster Theatre Club. It is a progress from unwilling volunteer in a One Act Play to novice stage hand and Stage Manager ending with a successful stint as producer for Grease.This is not intended nor conceived as a manual for would-be Stage Managers or for those interested in stage craft. I hope though that this will help anyone who is looking for a career or involvement in the theatre and can learn something from my experience. You learn more from your mistakes than your successes and that is a truism which will become self-evident.There are tales of production disasters, memorable performances and the funny side of staging a show from the auditions to first night mishaps. The book concentrates mainly on the eccentrics and the things that can and usually do go wrong on stage seen from the viewpoint of a Stage Manager.It is also a personal account looking at ten years of the Theatre Clubs history from 1978 to 1987. Now renamed the RBS Theatre Company it is the oldest active Club of its kind since being formed in 1876.I have drawn on my own career in the Bank to explain my involvement. Knights Templar of Hertford still meet in underground chambers connected by a secret network of tunnels. Two brothers described their existence in an exclusive interview for the local newspaper: a largely unknown, indeed mostly secret, ancient underground network that stretches beneath the towns main streets.
