Cajal's Neuronal Forest: Science and Art continues the tradition set forth by its sister volume Cajal's Butterflies of the Soul (OUP, 2009). This new collection contains hundreds of beautiful rarely-seen-before figures produced throughout the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century by famed father-of-modern-neuroscience Santiago Ramón y Cajal (1852-1934) and his contemporaries. Cajal was captivated by the beautiful shapes of the cells of the nervous system. He and his fellow scientists saw neurons as trees and glial cells as bushes. Given their high density and arrangement, neurons and glial resembled a thick forest, a seemingly impenetrable terrain of interacting cells mediating cognition and behavior. In unraveling the mysteries of the brain, these researchers encountered an almost infinite number of cellular forms with an extraordinary beauty, which they could not help but put pen to paper, allowing them to discover a new artistic world- the neuronal forest- that gave free rein not only to their imagination, but to a new way of viewing the brain as well.

Es neurocientífico, director del Laboratorio Cajal de Circuitos Corticales (CTB, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid) y profesor ad honorem del CSIC y de la UPM. Especialista en la microanatomía del cerebro, lleva más de cuatro décadas dedicado al estudio de la estructura y la organización de la corteza cerebral. Fue investigador principal en España del proyecto Neurolab de la NASA en 1998 y, en 2009, impulsó y lideró durante una década el Cajal Blue Brain Project. Este proyecto contribuyó a situar a España en una posición destacada en el abordaje multidisciplinar del estudio del cerebro, que combinó modelos matemáticos, simulaciones y el desarrollo de herramientas informáticas para el análisis microanatómico de la corteza cerebral. Además, dio origen al Laboratorio Cajal de Circuitos Corticales y propició su participación como uno de los trece líderes del Human Brain Project entre 2013 y 2023. Su trabajo ha contribuido de manera decisiva a ampliar el conocimiento de la organización cortical y a reforzar la proyección internacional de la neurociencia española. Considerado la máxima autoridad mundial en la obra científica de Santiago Ramón y Cajal, ha dedicado también una parte esencial de su trayectoria a difundir su legado y a mostrar las profundas relaciones entre ciencia, historia y arte. Su labor ha contribuido, además, a acercar la neurociencia al público general.
