Franz Hartmann (22 November 1838, Donauworth 7 August 1912, Kempten im Allgau) was a German medical doctor, theosophist, occultist, geomancer, astrologer, and author.

Franz Hartmann (1838-1912) was a German medical doctor, initiate, theosophist, occultist, astrologer, and writer. Described as "one of the most important theosophical writers of his time", his works include several books on esoteric studies (including Magic: White and Black, Alchemy and Astrology, Occult Science in Medicine, The Four Pillars of Occult Medicine and In the Pronaos of the Temple of Wisdom) and biographies of Jakob Bohme and Paracelsus. He translated the Bhagavad Gita into German and was the editor of the journals Lotusbluthen (1893-1900) and Neue Lotusbluten (1908-1913). He collaborated with the mystic Carl Kellner and was at one time a co-worker of Helena Petrovna Blavatsky and Henry Steel Olcott at Adyar. In 1896 he founded a German Theosophical Society, also supporting the Guido-Von-List-Society (Guido-Von-List-Gesellschaft). According to Theodor Reuss he was one of the original founders of the magical order that would later be known as Ordo Templi Orientis, along with Reuss and Carl Kellner.The Hartmanns work Axioms of Alchemy, which we propose to our readers today, is one of the most interesting studies of Alchemy written by the great German initiate.

"With the Adepts", the third of Hartmanns books written in 1910, and the first with a fictional setting, begins with a journey in the Alps. The narrator meets a mysterious dwarf. The dwarf takes him to an Adept who resides in a hidden Rosicrucian colony high in the mountains. This Adept proceeds to expound for a hundred and fifty pages on the Rosicrucian way, including Alchemy, Elementals and the acquisition of psychic powers. There is a demonstration of the transmutation of silver into gold using a red powder. The narrator also meets some of other residents, including two mysterious women who have vivid memories of their past lives, and the doppelganger of the Adept, who sends the narrator on a hallucinogenic night journey to the Indian ocean where he consorts with water spirits.On the whole, the book is a very straightforward read, unlike some of the other Rosicrucian tales; this is because the framing story is simply a fictional setting in which to examine the ideas, rather than a dense allegory. This book serves as a very compact introduction to this eternally fascinating subject of the invisible college.Franz Hartmann was a 19th century Bavarian physician, theosophist and writer. He emigrated to the United States, and became an American citizen, practising medicine in the then-frontier areas of the Midwest, including Missouri and Texas. He became interested in Spiritualism, and joined the Theosophists in 1883 at their enclave in Madras, India, a refuge similar in spirit to the one he pictures in this book. In his later years tended toward western rather than eastern esotericism.

This book was originally written for the purpose of disenchanting certain credulous inquirers, who fancied that the exercise of spiritual powers could be taught by teaching them certain incantations and formulas. It was to prove that spiritual powers must be developed before they can be exercised, and to explain the conditions necessary for their development. Since the appearance of the previous edition, a little additional knowledge, gained by the experiences of my own inner life, has enabled me to make certain corrections; to sift out much of what was irrelevant, and to remodel a great deal of what was incorrectly expressed. Moreover in this edition an attempt has been made to answer the numerous questions which have been addressed to me by the readers of "Magic". The most serious objection which has been made against this book has been on account of its title; but the causes which induced me to select such a title were suggested by the purpose for which the book was intended; nor would I at present be able to find one more appropriate for it, for "Magic" means that divine art or exercise of spiritual power by which the awakened spirit in man controls the invisible living elements in the soul-substance of the universe; but, above all, those in his own soul, which are the ones nearest to him. If we desire to master any forces whatever, it is, above all, necessary to know what they are and how they originate, and as we have no better means to study the qualities of any internal forces, than by observing those which are active within ourselves, the perception of the processes going on within our own psychic organism, will be the means to accomplish our object.
